The Surf Coast Shire, our backyard, is home to a wide diversity of native plants and animals. Many of these plants and animals are affected by a range of impacts such as habitat loss, competition and predation from non-native species and foreign diseases.
There are more than 70 threatened species in the Surfcoast Shire that are at risk of extinction and have been listed as Threatened Species *. They are classified as
- Critically endangered – Extremely high risk of extinction in the wild
- Endangered – High risk of extinction in the wild
- Vulnerable – High risk of endangerment in the wild
- Near Threatened – Likely to become endangered in the near future
